Understanding Winter Sports Travel Insurance
Why Standard Travel Insurance May Not Be Enough
Standard travel insurance policies typically exclude winter sports activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and other on-piste and off-piste activities. If you are injured on the slopes without the right cover, you could face enormous medical bills - mountain rescue, helicopter evacuation, and orthopaedic surgery in an Alpine resort can easily run to tens of thousands of pounds. Dedicated winter sports insurance (or a winter sports extension on your travel policy) is essential for any ski holiday.
What Winter Sports Insurance Covers
Medical Expenses
The most critical element. Look for at least 5 million pounds in medical expenses cover. Helicopter rescue alone can cost 5,000 to 15,000 pounds in many ski resorts.
Ski Equipment
Covers your own ski or snowboard equipment against loss, theft, or damage. Usually also covers hired equipment if yours becomes unusable. Check the single-item limit if you own high-end equipment.
Ski Pack
Reimburses unused ski hire, lessons, or lift passes if you cannot ski due to injury or illness.
Piste Closure
Pays a daily benefit if the resort closes due to lack of snow or too much snow. Often limited to a maximum number of days.
Avalanche Cover
Search and rescue costs if you are caught in an avalanche. Typically included in comprehensive winter sports policies.
Off-Piste and Freestyle Activities
Many policies exclude off-piste skiing, freestyle activities (terrain parks, moguls), ski racing, or heli-skiing. If you plan to ski off-piste, check the policy terms carefully and declare this when buying. Specialist policies covering off-piste are available but cost more.
